20 Random Acts of Kindness

Stephanie Dowick writes in her book 'Everyday Kindness'...

"Kindness will build our resilience and positivity, as well as concern for ourselves and others. It will protect us against the self-doubt and self-pity that would otherwise sap our strength. It will radically enhance our connections with others and our awareness of our capacity to give generously - and repeat the benefits that come with this. Bring kindness into the bigger picture of our lives will wake up and utilize our powers to choose, and to choose wisely and well. It will make us much easier to like and to love.
Our acts of kindness toward other people also depend on our consciousness of choice, and a willingness to take charge of our attitudes and actions. Those acts of kindness demonstrate a life-changing awareness that other people matter."

Make a commitment now to embed 20 random acts of kindness in your life this month. Encourage the children in your setting to do this and make it visible in your documentation. Demonstrate to everyone around you that kindness is valued. If we privilege kindness your life and the lives of others around you will flourish. Take the initiative and create a kinder world.

Make unhappy children happy again

Last week I sent 3 cards by snail mail (happy post) to three unknown children in hospitals. I wanted to give ill or sick children a smile, even if it was just for one second.

I want them to be strong again, fight and to win this battle. I hope I've given those children some hope, love and a moment of happines, with joy.
Maybe this is an idea that could be developed. Just sending small gifts of toys or items that young children could play with in bed. Sending things to the children's ward wrapped nicely to give children a little surprise.
It might even be something that could be done for others in hospital as well... I think it has many possibilities!!!!!

Just a moment of your time

Today I had the pleasure of visiting I saw this lovely lady, Olga. She doesn't speak very much, and our conversations are never deep. But it doesn't matter. What matters is that I'm there, holding her hand listening. She isn't alone. So many elderly are alone and living in convalescent homes.

They may have latest technology; tvs, all the latest gadgets, much like Olga's brand new establishment. But you know what? None of it means anything to them. All they want is company. All they want it for someone to care and to show them they matter.

People often say what I do is kind and so great. It really isn't. I do nothing special at all. I just turn up, and by doing so it shows I care. It shows she means something to me.

And she does. I took this photo today because sometimes I don't know what to do. I feed her biscuits, attempt conversation and when really stuck, pull out my phone and take photos. Today I did all three. It doesn't take much to show someone you care. It only asks that you be there.

A quote from Daniel Goldman on kindness
